The estate once belonged to the Tommasi family, one of the most important noble families in Cortona's history. Many parts of the estate have been recently restored, while fully preserving the structure and spirit of this historic property. The stables (La scuderia):
What was once a stable is now a two-storey building: the first floor consists of a wine cellar and a cellar, while the second floor houses a hall with a marble fireplace, a bathroom and a kitchen with a stone fireplace. Near the building there is a covered area where the old oaks have been integrated and where there is a wood-burning stove.
The limonaia and the magnolia
Aristocratic Tuscan families often erected a limonaia on their estates, a building built specifically for the wintering of their lemon trees and vases, as the climate is too cold in winter for them to survive in the ground. This property is no exception and has an exceptionally large building dedicated to this function. Next door is the magnolia building. It was formerly used to exhibit vintage cars. Today, this long and narrow room is an ideal place for parties, as the brick ceiling with wooden beams, the terracotta floors and the terracotta heaters create a pleasant atmosphere. Thanks to the numerous windows looking out onto the greenery, the hall is flooded with sunlight throughout the day.
The Limonaia is a building on the right-hand side of the villa, facing the boulevard. On the first floor there is a large hall, two smaller rooms with arched entrances and two bathrooms. The hall is ivory-colored, with two large wooden beams on the ceiling and terracotta
terracotta floors with inlays of light-colored stones. There are two large bedrooms, a bathroom and a dining room with a fireplace.
The garden:
The garden still resembles the drawings from the 1700's. There is an elaborate fountain known as the Nymph Room. There are a series of reflecting pools, statues and decorations in the rocaille style, a rococo style characterized by intricate rock, shell and scroll motifs. The garden features an oak-lined driveway, an orchard, a tree-lined road leading from the nymph room to the other side of the property, olive groves and a wide lawn with pine trees planted centuries ago, flowers and a large plane tree.
There is also a tennis court and a swimming pool with adjoining utility rooms. The water supply, which can be a rarity in Tuscany, is guaranteed for the ponds, the swimming pool and the entire green area. This is thanks to the wells in the garden, but above all to a spring that is located in front of the property and falls up to 60 m deep. The spring is called “fonte di Elceta”.
